Getting started with Microsoft Excel

Opening Microsoft™ Excel

Switch on the computer and open Microsoft Excel as follows:

When you have selected Microsoft Excel you should see a grid on your screen as shown below. Click with your mouse on different cells (rectangles). When you click on a cell it will become highlighted.

Notice that when you put your cursor over a cell, a white cross appears.

Use the arrow keys on your keyboard (as you did in Section 2.3) to move down, right, up and left.

Using Formulae in Microsoft™ Excel

Notice that the columns are labeled along the top A, B, C, D etc.

The rows are labeled down the side 1, 2, 3, 4, etc. Type the number 10 into cells A1 to A5 and type the formula show into cell A6. A formula starts with the = sign. If you use a formula in Excel it will calculate the answer.

Press the Tab key to come out of the cell. You will see the answer appear.
