learn computing with Microsoft Office 2000 - ISBN 1 872 35053 4Learn Computing with Microsoft Office is a self-learning guide especially written for those who are new to computing and who want to achieve a working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Access and Excel. This is achieved without the use of computer jargon in a series of easy to follow stages, which takes the reader. by a hands-on approach, from the fundamentals through to a level of confidence and proficiency in word processing, spreadsheets and databases.

This book is divided into easy to follow sections, written in plain text and liberally illustrated with graphics designed to ensure easy understanding. The reader is carefully guided through a series of hands-on exercises designed to reinforce understanding. Importantly the book has been tested on real beginners and refined to improve the clarity of instructions and to anticipate the sort of problems experienced by beginners.

One of the considerations taken into account in developing the book is that students often have difficulty remembering what they have learnt. To overcome this, there are numerous cross-references taking the reader back to the relevant earlier section. There is also an extensive appendix providing supplementary material. A floppy disk is also supplied containing ready-made exercises which can be used to develop skills without a lot of time being spent entering basic data.

A word processor allows the user to create much more attractive documents than is possible with a typewriter. If mathematical calculations need to be worked out for the production of simple accounts then a spreadsheet program such as Excel makes this very easy. You don’t have to be an accountant to get this done because the computer does the calculations for you. Similarly using a database allows the user to store and retrieve a huge amount of data very easily. Becoming computer literate therefore is a great advantage in today’s world.

Microsoft Word, Access and Excel have a great many advanced functions and no book would claim to cover everything. However after completing this book the reader will be confident in the use of Word, Access and Excel and will to be able to select the appropriate program for household accounts, attractive letters and generally storing and manipulating data.
